iPEC’s Energy
Leadership Index
The Energy Leadership Index is a structured assessment that maps how you currently approach decisions and respond to pressure. It was developed by the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching and is used by practitioners working with leaders in complex, high-stakes environments.
It is not a personality test nor does it place you in a fixed category or type. What it produces is a profile of your current decision-making patterns, specifically how you are showing up when the stakes are real and the margin for error is small.
What It Measures
The ELI identifies two things relevant to how leaders make decisions under pressure.
The first is your behavioral profile under normal conditions. The assessment surfaces the attitudes and assumptions shaping your decisions before you are consciously aware of them. In clinical environments these patterns show up in how you handle accountability conversations, how you respond when a provider pushes back, and how you make calls with incomplete information.
The second is how that profile shifts under stress. Most leaders make decisions differently under pressure than they do in steady state. For a clinic manager navigating staffing gaps, schedule conflicts, and patient experience pressures simultaneously, that shift is often where the most consequential decisions happen.
The Research Behind the Tool
The ELI is grounded in published research. Two papers are particularly relevant for leaders in complex clinical environments.
The first examines how shifts in behavioral patterns measured by the ELI correlate with measurable improvements in leadership competencies.
The second, published in partnership with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, addresses how this methodology supports resilience in healthcare professionals specifically.
How It Is Used Here
The ELI is the foundation of the Decision Support Partnership. The assessment happens first and anchors every session that follows.
The ELI is also available as a standalone session for leaders who want the profile and readout without committing to the full engagement.
A Note on Confidentiality
Results are completely confidential and never shared with your organization. If the ELI is part of an organizational engagement, individual results remain private. Only aggregate patterns with no attribution are reported.
What the Readout Looks Like
The readout is a 75-minute working session scheduled after you complete the assessment. It is not a report review. It is a structured conversation anchored to the decisions you are actually carrying right now.
The session covers three things: your baseline behavioral profile under normal conditions, how that profile shifts when pressure increases, and what both reveal about the specific decision patterns you are navigating right now.
You leave with a clear read on what is driving those patterns and a concrete starting point for addressing them.
